I liked Juntura, they were pretty good. The Hand is good; that;s a pretty good local rock band. Kampfire Collective was good but they're pretty much done, same with a lot of those old Neurolux regular bands. I'm not even sure Bovalexia or The Universal are together anymore.

Midline was a solid band even if you did not care for their music. They should have made it out of Boise at least.

Subject: RE: Favorite Local Band.

I agree; I respected Midline and liked them better than Fly to Void even though I was never a big fan of the modern hard rock/nu metal sound- Midline was just far more talented. XeX was good too, in an 80's power metal kind of way. There were a couple of good local metal bands that had potential who just never made it- Pandora's Box was another one.

This is a conversation being held between Todd Christiansen and Todd Christiansen. Maybe Bug and and a member of the Universal have said a thing or two but I'd eat my hat if there was a single post up here that wasn't written by someone in one of the above named bands. You guys are stroking yourselves hoping for some attention.

No shit, Sherlock. You're a regular Hardy Boy for cracking this case: "The Case of the Insecure Dewshag Former Bandmember."

Way to go. Yer smart. EVERY band mentioned in this post exemplifies musical mediocrity, and even the most accomplished (Midline; put out a record; toured) suffers from "Boise Syndrome," the belief that just because it comes from Boise it is somehow good and worthy of mention. But we all know that when these bands get on the road or put out records they are just another struggling band trying to get noticed in a sea of struggling bands trying to get noticed. The music is just plain middle-of-the-road, even if your locks are right-on the money for metal.

In fact, I'm not sure if ANY band in this city knows what's it's like to be truly creative or innovative without coming off as pretentious or plagaristic. But then again Olive Garden was recently voted "Best Italian Restaurant" in the Weekly or Scene or something. NOTE: to any local dipshit who went to high school in Boise (like many of the people in the above named bands) but never left. Get the fuck out! You need a reality check!

^ Yes, Boise is actually kind of a lame city culturally, though locals will fight this assertion tooth and nail. I think their standards are just so very low and if something they identify with or support is questioned for coolness, legitimacy etc. they lash out. The other day I heard someone at work bitching about the Lays potato chip commercial having the nerve to actually not include Idaho in it's list of great potato producing states. "The nerve! How dare they!" This bitch was serious too! The Boise City Arts Commission, The Weekly, many local bands and artists...all have the local Boisean taint on them. They also all have the misconception that they are where it's at for culture in Boise without realizing that they are actually responsible for perpetuating the lameness and low standard. Say this to one of these idiots at the Lux some Wednesday morning and they will go off on you. Built to Spill is pretty good though. The one exception to above said rules but a major contributor to poseurdom and deuchbaggery in the music scene in Boise. Thanks Doug Martsch.

^^I agree. Case in point, Finn Riggins. Thanks Lisa, for breathing in the microphone off key, so we can all hear how alternative you can be. I could never get over headband dude, either, what? is this your serious song? with your headband on? And people eat up these musicians songs. Why? People here have pretty bad taste and have mob mentality. However, there are a lot of people who lie, and say, 'Yeah, they're pretty good," or, "Awesome, you guys did great" to which it feeds numerous douchebags egos and sets the course for more annoyingly immature music.

Some of us like having fun and taking it seriously is part of the fun! Why more bands don't leave Boise? I blame the drugs! Oh and my all time favorite Boise band is the UNIVERSAL!!!!!! Favorite locals are as follows:

I can't think of anymore. Basically anyone who falls into the singer/songwriter catagory. But props to all musicians!

there are/were some good bands from here. The Hand, Kampfire, The Treatment/ZenZero, Pandora's Box, and yeah, I include Bovalexia and The Universal in the list of "good" bands because at least the former was original and the latter were(are?) creative and talented. (not sure if either band is still together at this point though...)

I have seen the "mob mentality of mediocrity" though around here. People are willing to embrace ANYTHING that sounds "alternative" regardless of how good it really is. While the younger "Metal" kids automatically love anything with chugging downtuned chords and cookie monster vocals, no matter how bad it is. Cases in point: Slain in Silence (aaaargh, these guys are horrible!) and Kris Doty (yeah she's pretty good looking, but she sings off key and has really odd-ball, equally atonal acoustic music. That is, when people dont confuse her with Chris Daughtry!)

yeah I forgot about them. They're done, now, too. Thats another thing about bands from around here- just when they start to get things rolling; get a following and maybe even pick up a bit of label interest, they go and split up, usually at the most inopportune times.

Subject: RE: Favorite Local Band.

well dont worry; Stumbleblind is yet another long-since defunct band you wont have to "prefer" anymore. The singer just up and quit, the guitarist (i.e. the Kieth Richards looking dude) has some new thing going, and the bass player joined up with ZenZero.

Kris doty is great! She's not out of key, she has this advanced sence of melody that transfers into a harmony that can sometimes seem like she's off key. (I learned a thins in colage music theory) she's a bit "headey" I suppose, so I see why people don't dig it, but I wanna stand up for her cred. And she's supper cute. I got a crush on her! (im not a lesbian) FYI. Not that that maters, but ya know.......

Too many bands that play the Neurolux have no sense of subtlety. They've no idea of how to properly play their instruments, they're just desperate to be reknowned. Instead they beat the hell out of their instruments at the loudest volume possible. I heard Hayhurst call it "replacing skill for volume" which I think just about sums it up.

Kris Doty is very, very fuckable. She's smokin' plus plays the guitar. Yummy.

"Colage music theory?" WTF?! Is that where you cut out pictures/lyrics of Ravel, Pocobelli, Gershwin etc. and glue them all together on a piece of paper in a random pattern?

Yikes. Stay outta the liquor cabinet. Also, you don't have to be a lesbian to want to hook up with Kris Doty. Just explore your womanly desires. It's O.K. It's beautiful and natural.

Just let me take photos when ya do it...

First show I ever saw at the Lux was Bovelexia and I was instantly a fan. Those guys were fucking awesome to watch. They broke up soon after that and I heard that Tod went to go play with a band called Morning and Pills. I got achance to check them out and I gotta say to whoever thought they were terrible, man you either never heard them or you got some personal grudge. Get over it. I'm listening to them right now on their myspace. And Tod is ripping the holy living shit out of that surf rock guitar on Bi Polar Shoes. I caught them a few times after Tod quit and reformed Bovelexia and they were still cool but they mellowed out a bit. I dig it loud. I loved going to those shows and after to the Crazy Horse to see Another Man's Poison. Punk as fuck!

I forgot to mention the Magnetics, they are also a pretty good local band. Now that I say that, they'll probably just go and break up though!

Even though everyone moved away but Isaac, Mere Cat was pretty cool. Morning and Pills were good, c'mon!!! AKA Belle and johnathon Warren and the Billy Goats are pretty talented groups, too. I think some of the indie groups have a lackadaisical stage presence, which makes them bad no matter how good they are.

Grandmas House was the house the hosted touring bands like Awesome Color, Prizzy Prizzy Please and the goddamn gallows. So if you think that the Boise scene sucks and you have never been to Grandmas House then you dont know what your talking about. Oh ya, so fuck off

^ thems touring bands! This thread is LOCAL bands! And I never heard of them so..... How good can they be if they played in a basement, not the lux, vac, bucket, jd n friends, knitting factory, venue, reef , red room, gustos. Did I miss any legitimate venues?

Is the universal realy broken up? Who ever said that bovalexia would want a record contract? Who ever said morning and pills is anywhere near the quality of either said band? Or another mans poison for thar mater. What label you on capitalist cocksucker?

Subject: RE: Favorite Local Band.

I have heard that yeah, the Universal is, in fact, broken up, or if not actually split, then they are on an indefinate hiatus. So is ZenZero too, apparently- some sort of internal bickering between the Schmaljohn family and the other two members (not really my buisness, just reporting what I heard.)

New fave local band: Trigger Itch. I like those guys. Great energy and songs.

"Anywhere near the quality"

That's fucking rich. Who said anything about quality, hesher? You think your band is quality huh? What kind of quality we talkin' here? Quality enough to make it off the stage of the Neurolux. Did you get to open up for some band everyone thought was hip in high school when they played the Big Easy eight years ago? Got you thinking you're hot stuff?

You fucking retard. Nancy fucking spastic. No label would ever have you so you pretend the idea is totally beneath you. Face it, you fucking sissy, you're just as washed up as the rest of us.

Go back to your stupid job at the college and shut your fucking mouth. Get a haircut while you're at and throw away that sad leather jacket too. Fucking blue flame wearin' sissy bitch.

Tod, you're a douchebag. You've always been a douchebag. You will always be a douchebag.

I used to think it was because of your frustration that no bar can legally stock the ammount of liquor it would take to get a girl drunk enough to sleep with you. But I think your issue goes deeper than that. If you're not being a mincing little whinner then you're spouting off enough zen crap to make Sidartha puke. You're the kind of guy a father would point out to his son and say "Boy, if you ever turn out like that I'm ripping your balls off and putting you in a dress"

Do the world a favor already.

Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg When I saw it was a time for a change Killed the Czar and his ministers Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank Held a general's rank When the Blitzkrieg raged And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name, oh yeah Ah, what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game, oh yeah

I watched with glee While your kings and queens Fought for ten decades For the gods they made

(woo woo, woo woo)

I shouted out, "Who killed the Kennedys?" When after all It was you and me (who who, who who)

Let me please introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste And I laid traps for troubadours Who get killed before they reached Bombay (woo woo, who who)

Keep in mind that the topic of the thread is FAVORITE local band, not BEST local band. BEST is just an opinion too, really, but people still like to argue about it. FAVORITE band is not something anybody can argue about. You just say your favorite and that's it. I guess I'd have to say The Very Most. Some of you would rather hear something more intense and aggressive, I'm sure, and that's okay. That's why there's different kinds of music. Some people like it bright and sunny - other people like it wild and crazy or drunk and pukey. It takes all kinds. I honestly don't know why anyone would ever argue about music, or even talk about it at all, because different people get off on or relate to different things. Not much more to say, you know?
