ImageAfter a five-year run, Downtown bar Terrapin Station will close Aug. 15.

Named after a Grateful Dead song and album, Terrapin Station finally succumbed to the typical bar maladies: A poor economy, lack of band promotion, weak attendance at concerts, landlord/rent issues, etc.

Music will continue until the bar closes -- including a couple of Ned Evett dates Aug. 5 and 6.

Rumors have circulated over the years about the nightclub's struggles. This time, the closure is real. Terrapin Station will not renew its five-year lease.

"We have had tons of fun and will be walking away with no regrets as to how we did things," says Dave Eilers, who handles booking at the club.

That space at 1519 W. Main St. has a rich history. In the '90s, it was an all-ages punk, indie-rock and metal venue: The Crazy Horse, which hosted groups ranging from Mudhoney to Korn. Later, it morphed into J.D.'s and Friends, a hip-hop dance club that hosted diverse shows ranging from rap (2 Live Crew) to death metal (Six Feet Under). Terrapin Station was known as a neo-hippie/jam-band bar, although in reality it booked a large variety of bands.

No word on the future of the building. My gut tells me it won't involve live music.

Where are the people denying it now? I have been telling you this for months now but I guess it is like the boy who crys wolf. Too bad- A hippy bar was what Boise needed and that did not even survive here.

you've been telling us that for YEARS now. Since the day it opened in fact. We stopped caring long ago because every time it turned out to be just some disgruntled troll talking shit about the place. Thing is, it was bound to close eventually-but so will the Neurolux; whether that is next year or in 20-30 years eventually Allen will sell the place or retire and then it too will close.

And then, The Knitting Factory and the fucking Venue will be the only live music places left in Boise. (The Visual Arts collective doesnt count since it's actually in Garden City, duh.)

The only reason the shithole stayed open for so long was that the owners keep pumping their own mony into it,anywhere from 2000 to 3500 dollars a month, and when the 2 idiots that were running it after it was sold, got a hold of it, their parents shoved cash at the idiots to keep them from moving back home with them. It was nothing but a hobby for idiots. And a babysitting project for parents who hate their asshole kids.
